Russia’s Foreign Ministry published a report detailing the actions and omissions of authorities in Germany, Italy and Japan that, it argues, are eroding and falsifying history, legitimizing fascism and ‘whitewashing’ its backers.
The online document asserts that the former World War II Axis partners are using concepts from their dark past to erase the ugliest facts of their regimes from public memory and to deny the Soviet Union’s decisive role in the victory over Nazism.
The report also underscores what it describes as an ideological affinity between today’s political elites in these three countries and the fascist and militarist leaders of the 1930s and 1940s.
In this context, the ministry says it is deeply concerned about a rise in anti‑Russian revanchism, which it claims is reflected, among other things, in support for neo‑Nazi regimes in Ukraine and the Baltic states.
It adds that it is «no coincidence» that over the past three years the countries mentioned have voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution that calls for preventing any revival of Nazism and condemns all forms of racial discrimination.
Finally, the report criticizes countries whose history, it says, already includes some of the most inhumane chapters in the global record for continuing their ‘slanders against Russia,’ carrying out ‘provocative and dangerous’ security games, and seeking to involve nations outside Europe in their ventures.
The «centers of the former Axis» seeking to stoke a militarist posture, the document concludes, have no moral authority to lecture others about aggression or other violations of international law.
