Following an instruction from President Gabriel Boric, Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren announced on Thursday, February 12, that Chile will contribute to UNICEF through the Chile Fund Against Hunger and Poverty, managed by the International Development Cooperation Agency (AGCID).

The minister reminded that this United Nations agency operates in Cuba, «implementing interventions addressing the critical situation on the island, including water provision, health care, and nutrition, with equipment and supplies aimed at ensuring the continuity of essential services, especially for children and adolescents.»

«The Government of Chile stands in solidarity with the Cuban people amid the humanitarian catastrophe they are experiencing, a situation further exacerbated by the tightening of the economic and energy blockade facing that country,» stated Foreign Minister van Klaveren.

«U.S. Blockade is Criminal»

Upon learning of the news regarding Chile’s humanitarian aid to Cuba, President Boric described the U.S. blockade as «criminal» and an «assault on the human rights of an entire people.»

«One can have differences with Cuba, but nothing justifies the harm being inflicted on children and innocent citizens,» the Chilean leader expressed.

«We call for an end to this inhumane blockade, as has been requested by the United Nations Assembly on multiple occasions,» added Gabriel Boric.

What is the Chile Fund?

In 2006, Law No. 20,138 was enacted, authorizing Chile to contribute to actions against hunger and poverty.

This law empowers the President of the Republic to make contributions of up to $5 million annually as part of initiatives against hunger and poverty, directed towards funds, programs, and agencies of the United Nations System.
