Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Spain Condemn Attack in Venezuela and Demand Peaceful Solution

On January 4, 2026, the governments of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, and Spain released a joint statement expressing their serious concerns regarding recent events in Venezuela, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter.

The signatory states conveyed their «deep concern and rejection» of the unilateral military actions taken within Venezuelan territory, indicating that these actions violate fundamental principles of international law, particularly the prohibition of the use and threat of force, as well as respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

The statement warns that such actions set a «highly dangerous» precedent for regional peace and security, posing direct risks to civilian populations and emphasizing the severe consequences that such interventions could generate in the Latin American and Caribbean context.

Furthermore, the governments reiterated that the situation in Venezuela should be resolved «exclusively through peaceful means,» emphasizing dialogue, negotiation, and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people in all its forms, free from external interference and in strict adherence to international law. In this regard, they underscored that only an inclusive political process, led by Venezuelans, can lead to a democratic, sustainable solution that respects human dignity.

The text also reaffirms the nature of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, founded on mutual respect, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and non-intervention. The signatory countries call for regional unity, transcending political differences, against any action that jeopardizes regional stability.

Finally, the statement urges the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Member States of relevant multilateral mechanisms to use their good offices to help de-escalate tensions and preserve regional peace. It also expresses concern over any attempts at government control, administration, or external appropriation of natural or strategic resources, warning that such actions are incompatible with international law and threaten the political, economic, and social stability of the region.

This pronouncement was endorsed by the governments of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, and Uruguay.
