A CIPER investigation estimates that Chile’s AFP pension administrators have at least US$34 million invested through funds that hold shares in arms manufacturers and war-technology companies included on a list of corporations said to have benefited from the genocide in Gaza.
In June 2025, UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine Francesca Albanese released a report identifying corporations that, in her assessment, have profited from what she called the ‘economy of genocide’ in Gaza. CIPER examined how much of Chileans’ pension savings were committed to funds that hold shares in weapons and defense-technology firms appearing on that list and that have earned gains amid the conflict.
Among the findings, as of July 2025 the AFPs had allocated US$4.542 billion to funds and investment companies that—among other assets—own shares of the firms named by Albanese.
After reviewing the underlying portfolios of those international funds, CIPER determined that, from the total resources AFPs invested in them, at least US$34.5 million ultimately sat in shares of companies identified by the UN rapporteur.
The investigative outlet also recalled that Chilean law places no ethical restrictions on AFP operations abroad. Asked by CIPER, four AFPs said their investments comply with regulations and are based on profitability criteria. The other three did not respond.
