Colombian President Petro to Publicly Disclose Financial Records Following Trump’s Controversial Labeling

The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro , announced he will make his entire financial history public after U.S. President Donald Trump included him in the so-called «Clinton list,» which identifies individuals and organizations connected to drug trafficking and organized crime.

This registry was established by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) during former President Bill Clinton’s administration in 1995 as a tool to combat international drug trafficking and money laundering.

On October 24, the White House announced that Petro, his wife Verónica Alcocer, his son Nicolás Petro Burgos, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti were added to the Clinton List.

The U.S. State Department justified the inclusion by arguing that cocaine production in Colombia reached record levels under Petro’s administration.

In response, the Colombian President stated on his X account: «Indeed, the threat from Senator Bernie Moreno materialized; my children, my wife, and I have entered the OFAC list. My defense attorney will be Dany Kovalik from the U.S. Fighting against drug trafficking for decades and effectively has brought me this measure from the government of a society that we have helped to curb their cocaine consumption.»

Petro Will Disclose His Complete Financial History

However, on Monday, referencing a $3.6 billion contract his government signed with Swedish firm Saab for the acquisition of 17 Gripen aircraft, Petro confirmed he will publish his financial history to prevent any speculation against him.

«Given the grossness of President Trump integrating me and my family into the Clinton list without any of us being drug traffickers or having ties to drug traffickers, I have decided that all my financial life, long but frugal, will be published,» he stated on his X account.

He assured that the Financial Information and Analysis Unit (UIAF) will be able to publish all his accounts since the entity’s inception.

In his message, the progressive leader referred to Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, a close figure to President Donald Trump, who has made several attacks against him.

According to the President, the Ohio senator resents him for past accusations against his brothers, Luis Alberto and Roberto Moreno, of being involved in corruption cases linked to the «Bank of the Pacific robbery,» the «illegal urbanization of Bogotá’s savanna,» and money laundering operations.

«I know that Trump’s grossness, also regarding Clinton, stems from Bernie Moreno’s lobbying and that this is simply a revenge for my debates against his brothers that I have decided to publish,» he asserted.

«Anyone can pass through San Simón in the extreme north of Bogotá and take a photo of the buildings, which should not be constructed at all and see who owns the construction company; then they will understand my debate from June 2000. The buildings today are being built on the land that belonged to Kling Mazuera, wife of then-chancellor Andrés Pastrana, and neighbor to the lot of the former president’s wife,» he pointed out.

The Colombian leader emphasized that throughout his career he has always separated his public life from his private one.

«I know what it means to be democratic and honest with the people,» he commented.

«I understand the envy it creates in people who can only take photos with ‘young ones’ or with pedophiles. My life has been so intense that I can show many photos with completely different people than the ‘young ones,’ for example: Nobel laureates, real princesses, or countesses; my favorite embrace has always been with the humble working woman of my town,» he added.
