The first of 38 buses carrying freed Palestinian prisoners entered southern Gaza on Monday, according to the Prisoners Information Office. Its director said the group includes detainees who spent decades in Israeli prisons. In Khan Yunis, crowds turned out with flags and songs; a correspondent for Al Mayadeen reported the presence of Hamas and Islamic Jihad banners during the reception.

Meanwhile, other buses arrived in Ramallah, where families and supporters awaited the freed detainees at the Cultural Palace. The day combined jubilant celebrations with identity checks required under release protocols.

Exchange Underway: Figures, Destinations, and Deportations

Khan Yunis saw jubilant homecomings for the freed Palestinian prisoners arriving on the first of 38 buses headed to Gaza. In parallel, Ramallah welcomed other releases at the Cultural Palace, while 1,966 prisoners were still on buses inside Israeli prisons, according to Reuters.

According to the Prisoners Information Office, the operation involves 38 buses and a prioritized list that — said the Palestinian Resistance — includes names specifically requested, especially those from Gaza.

  • Deportations: 154 freed individuals will be sent outside the Palestinian territories.
  • Life sentences: the release of 250 people serving life terms is expected, with destinations in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and abroad.
  • Still in transit: 1,966 prisoners remained this morning on buses inside Israeli prisons, according to Reuters.

With the first bus reaching Gaza and receptions in Ramallah, the prisoner exchange enters a phased transfer stage that could continue over the coming hours and days. Authorities and organizations involved in the process anticipate verification steps, handovers, and potential additional movements as the lists agreed with mediators are carried out.
