Five tourists have tragically lost their lives in Torres del Paine after a trekking group became stranded during a sudden and severe snowstorm.

Initial reports indicate that among the deceased are two Mexican nationals, one British, and two Germans. The storm began on Monday, preventing any aerial or ground searches as night fell. According to Carabineros, rescue operations could only resume at dawn, targeting a remote area known as ‘Los Perros,’ notorious for its harsh accessibility and recent intense snowfall accompanied by wind gusts reaching 193 km/h.

«Of the seven individuals reported missing, four are safe, but three have died, bringing the total to five fatalities. We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and express our gratitude to the rescue teams,» stated the Regional Presidential Delegation of Magallanes, confirming the identification of all group members.

Authorities have announced the conclusion of the search, with plans for the air evacuation of the bodies set for Wednesday, November 19. This operation will be conducted by the Air Force, the Army, and high-altitude rescue teams from Carabineros.

As this report concludes, President Gabriel Boric addressed the families, friends, and loved ones of the five deceased individuals from Mexico, Germany, and Britain, expressing, «My deepest condolences. Know that you have the full support of Chilean authorities and organizations during these challenging times.»

The president also recognized the efforts of the rescue teams, including Carabineros, the Army, Socorro Andino, and Conaf, who have tirelessly worked from the beginning on the search, rescue, and evacuation missions amid severe snow and winds of up to 190 kilometers per hour.
