Valparaíso’s Eduardo Pereira Hospital Set to Upgrade Surgical Instruments Following Regional Government Funding Approval

A significant boost for public health in Valparaíso emerged during the recent plenary session of the Regional Council, which approved funding for Eduardo Pereira Hospital to renew its surgical instruments. This replacement project specifically targets the operating room services at the hospital located in Valparaíso, benefitting a total of 482,736 residents.

Regional Councilor Paula Rosso, who championed the initiative, praised the hospital’s director, Daniela Sigmund: «Since she took office, she has pursued every possible avenue to secure resources, successfully obtaining funding not only from the Regional Government,» highlighted the local councilor.

Regarding the social impact of this initiative, Rosso described it as «a support with regional and national significance, as they excel in high-complexity surgeries. The compassionate approach of the hospital teams, despite challenging conditions, is extremely important and has been recognized with awards,» emphasized the councilor.

The hospital explained that the primary objective of this project is to «maintain and elevate the quality standards of operating room and recovery services provided to network users,» which can be achieved by «replacing surgical instruments that are approaching the end of their lifecycle, thereby ensuring continuity and excellence in care.»

«The option to optimize the current situation by only renewing the instruments that are no longer in circulation is not viable, as the existing instruments date back to 2018 and have an estimated useful life of 10 years, or between 300 and 900 sterilization cycles. Thus, renewing only a portion of the instruments would mean that the non-replaced items would continue to deteriorate progressively,» stated the hospital authorities.

Finally, Regional Councilor Paula Rosso appreciated the commitment shown on this matter by Governor Rodrigo Mundaca: «It’s gratifying to hear the commitment and support for these types of projects from the Regional Government. I am grateful for the support for initiatives at Eduardo Pereira Hospital, allowing its director Daniela Siegmund to present the project we successfully approved today. Without a doubt, this is good news for public health in the region,» concluded the local councilor.

Project Portfolio Exceeding 8.9 Billion

The funding for Eduardo Pereira Hospital is part of a total investment exceeding 8.9 billion pesos included in the project portfolio approved by the regional councilors, which was prioritized by Regional Governor Rodrigo Mundaca.

Among the approved projects, detailed in circular 33, highlights in healthcare include the replacement of an ultrasound machine in the communities of Juan Fernández and La Cruz; acquisition of mammography machines for the Valparaíso – San Antonio Health Service, Hospital San Agustín in La Ligua, and the municipality of Algarrobo; replacement of autoclave equipment for the Cesfam in Calle Larga; ambulances in various regions of the area; and the procurement of a mobile clinic for Llay Llay, among other initiatives.

In the realm of public safety, projects include the expansion of the tele-protection system in Los Andes; acquisition of portals with automatic license plate reading cameras in Quilpué; the purchase and expansion of the surveillance system in La Calera; and the replacement of a rescue vehicle for the 3rd Company of Firefighters in Valparaíso.

After the meeting held in the new Regional Government offices on Condell Street in Valparaíso, Governor Rodrigo Mundaca expressed appreciation for the outcome: «We have approved an investment portfolio of over 8.9 billion pesos with a focus on health and safety.»

«In terms of health, it is important to acknowledge the equipment for surgical interventions at Pereira Hospital, a highly significant project for a hospital that performs numerous surgeries; it has a budget of over 400 million pesos. I want to highlight the acquisition of mammography machines for the Aconcagua Health Service, a mammogram for the Petorca province, and another for the municipality of Algarrobo,» emphasized the regional authority.

«The public investment conducted by the Regional Government in health has been quite vigorous, particularly in terms of equipment, demonstrating our commitment to the health of our region,» added Governor Rodrigo Mundaca.
