Venezuela Installs New National Assembly on January 5: Swears in Deputies Amid Rejection of U.S. Aggressions

On Monday, January 5, the new Venezuelan Assembly will be established with the swearing-in of deputies elected during the parliamentary elections held last May.

This event occurs against a backdrop of political tension following the attacks launched by the United States against the Caribbean nation on Saturday, January 3, which included the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who were taken to New York.

In the wake of this orchestrated aggression by the Donald Trump administration, Delcy Rodríguez, who served as vice president, has been appointed as the acting president of the Republic.

According to constitutional protocols, the day will commence with quorum verification and the formation of a debating commission.

The central focus of the day will be the swearing-in of the legislators, who will assume their seats to represent various regions of the country for the next five years.

Subsequently, the General Assembly will proceed to elect and appoint the new Board of Directors, which includes the Presidency, the First and Second Vice-Presidencies, as well as the Secretariat and Deputy Secretariat.

Condemnation of U.S. Attacks Against Venezuela

A statement regarding the military aggression perpetrated by Washington against the Bolivarian nation is also anticipated. This action is deemed a blatant violation of national sovereignty, the United Nations Charter, and international law, as legislators offer a message of unity and resistance against what they describe as external aggression.

During a public gathering held in Caracas yesterday, which aimed to demand the return of President Maduro and his wife, Deputy Tania Díaz (PSUV/National) reaffirmed that Venezuela’s strategy against U.S. government aggression is to unify the people with the political-military leadership.

“We have a constitution that we wrote with our own hands. Here there is a government and
there are patriots. We have communal councils, communes, militias, and spokespeople,” affirmed the parliamentarian.

She proposed that the strategy against the United States involves organization as well. “We have a high political-military command, and every person knows what to do, their place, and where they need to be,” she stated, adding that “no matter what happens, Venezuela will remain free, sovereign, and independent.”

In a similar vein, Deputy Gabriela Peña (PSUV/Miranda) emphasized that, despite the aggressions from the U.S. government, the National Assembly will be installed to fulfill its functions for the period 2026-2031.

Peña echoed the demands from the Venezuelan people directed at the Trump administration for the release of Maduro and Flores.

“We must maintain calm, composure, and nerves of steel, just as instructed by the President of the Republic in recent days; additionally, we must maximize mobilization to demand the restoration of his functions as the First Mandatary to continue his mandate,” she outlined.

Who Will Preside Over the National Assembly?

For the installation session, the ratification of Jorge Rodríguez as president of the National Assembly is expected, which would mark his sixth consecutive term leading the Legislative Power.

In his management overview, the parliamentarian highlighted that between January 5, 2021, and January 5, 2026, the Parliament held over 300 sessions and passed 100 laws aimed at, as he claimed, protecting the country, strengthening Popular Power, and institutional recovery. Among the most recent is the Law of Protection of Navigation and Trade Freedoms Against Piracy, Blockades, and Other Illicit International Acts.

However, according to local media, the legislative body could also be led by Deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, the son of President Nicolás Maduro.

Another name being discussed is Pedro Infante, who currently serves as the first vice president of the National Assembly.
