'If Trump gives the world—and especially Ukrainians—the chance to achieve that cease-fire, he should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He will be nominated by Ukraine,' Zelenskyy said.

Kyiv would nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he sends Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine and helps broker a cease-fire with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday.

‘During our most recent meeting, I didn’t hear a no. What I did hear was that work will continue at the technical level and that this possibility would be considered,’ Zelenskyy told a group of reporters in the Ukrainian capital, referring to a late-September meeting with Trump in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

In his view, ‘the plan to end the war won’t be easy,’ but he said it is ‘certainly the way forward.’

He added that if the Republican magnate ‘gives the world—above all, the Ukrainian people—the opportunity for such a cease-fire, then yes, he should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.’

‘We will nominate him on behalf of Ukraine,’ he emphasized, as reported by Politico.eu.

At the press briefing, he highlighted that Tomahawk missiles can travel up to 1,500 kilometers, which would allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia as far as Siberia, strengthening its position and bringing Kremlin representatives ‘to the negotiating table.’

He acknowledged that he had asked Joe Biden for these long-range precision missiles, but said the former U.S. president’s administration rejected the request.

Donald Trump said Monday that he had ‘more or less’ made a decision on whether to send the missiles to Ukraine, but that if he did so he wanted clarity on how they would be used in the conflict.

‘I’ve made a decision, more or less. I think I want to know what they’re doing with them, where they’re sending them, I suppose. I have to ask that question,’ the president said, adding that he does not want to see an escalation.

In response to Zelenskyy’s request and Trump’s remarks, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that if Washington proceeds with sending Tomahawks to Kyiv, it ‘would lead to a new, serious stage of escalation in the Ukrainian crisis’ and could cause ‘irreparable damage to U.S.-Russian relations.’

Trump’s push for the Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Trump has been campaigning to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming he has ended seven wars, including those between Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, as well as Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and even Armenia and Azerbaijan.

According to Politico.eu, the Republican has even called Norway’s finance minister, Jens Stoltenberg, to ask about his candidacy.

Although on Wednesday he told the White House press pool that he doesn’t believe ‘anyone in history has resolved as many’ conflicts as he has, he was skeptical that the Norwegian Nobel Committee would grant him the award.

‘Maybe they’ll find an excuse not to give it to me,’ he said.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has kept the list of nominees secret, as its rules require. This year’s edition reportedly includes a total of 338 candidates competing for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

The laureate will be announced this Friday, October 10, and the medal is expected to be presented, as every year, at a ceremony scheduled for December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896. Even if Trump does not achieve his goal this time, he is likely to press on into next year, the 125th anniversary of the prize.
