On April 8, Senator Javier Macaya (UDI) confidently took to the social media platform X to discuss inflation, comparing the rate recorded in Chile for March with that of other countries.

«Data defeats narrative,» the right-wing lawmaker stated, before presenting the following figures: «Chile 1.0% in March. Lula’s Brazil 3.8%. Sheinbaum’s Mexico 4.0%. UK’s Starmer 3.0%. More subsidies, more inflation equals.»

«The OECD clearly states: the war increased inflation by 1.2 points. Oil doesn’t distinguish political colors,» Macaya added.

However, just minutes later, journalist Daniel Matamala provided the critical counterpoint, pointing out that the UDI senator was comparing Chile’s monthly inflation rate to the accumulated inflation rates over 12 months from the other mentioned countries.

«Senator, you’re comparing apples to oranges; the monthly inflation of Chile with the annual inflation (accumulated over the last 12 months) of Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom,» Matamala remarked, exposing Javier Macaya’s significant oversight.
