The Parliament of Catalonia has issued a statement backing the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail this week from Barcelona toward Gaza to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population.

Notably, this flotilla comprises over 80 vessels and 1,000 participants from 70 countries, including seven citizens from Chile.

The official document released by the Catalan Parliament states, «Despite the so-called ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of a so-called ‘Peace Board’ led by the United States, the Israeli government has caused the deaths of approximately 700 Palestinians in Gaza since the announcement of the ceasefire agreement on October 10, 2025, according to data from the Gaza Ministry of Health.»

«Furthermore, Israel continues to block the entry of essential food and medical supplies into Gaza, after more than 18 years of blockade. This situation highlights that the ceasefire is merely nominal, with hostilities continuing in practice,» the statement adds.

In this context, the lawmakers emphasized the significance of the Global Sumud Flotilla, described as «a fleet of civilian boats that departed from the port of Barcelona on April 14 (…) constituting the largest humanitarian flotilla to date.»

The mission aims to shed light on the ongoing violence; advocate for the opening of a humanitarian corridor to Gaza to address the shortage of food and supplies; call for international solidarity with the Palestinian people; demand an end to violence, occupation, and apartheid; support the reconstruction of Gaza under Palestinian leadership, respecting its sovereignty; and contribute to ensuring accountability for those responsible for these events,» the statement outlines.

At this juncture, the legislators formally affirmed their position as the Parliament of Catalonia, reiterating «their rejection and condemnation of the acts of genocide that the State of Israel would be perpetrating in the Gaza Strip against the Palestinian population, in violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Geneva Conventions, and International Humanitarian Law.»

Moreover, they condemned «the violation of fundamental rights of the Palestinian population, including the systematic destruction of homes and infrastructure, as well as the blockade of essential supplies such as energy, water, food, and medicines.»

Support for the Global Sumud Flotilla

In relation to the initiative by the civil society Global Sumud Flotilla, supported by organizations like Open Arms and Greenpeace, the Catalan Parliament expressed «its support for this initiative aimed at providing humanitarian aid, opening a humanitarian corridor, and reconstruction under Palestinian leadership.»

Finally, they requested «the Generalitat Government and the State Government to take all necessary measures to protect this initiative, including the provision of diplomatic and consular protection to participating individuals, through appropriate actions.»
