Democratic Senator from Arizona, Rubén Gallego, stated in Madrid that he believes it is «highly likely» that the Trump administration is considering military intervention to enforce a regime change in Cuba.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, the U.S. legislator—who is a former Marine and Iraq veteran—directly pointed out Marco Rubio’s influence: «Cubans in Florida have significant power, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio is obsessed with the island.»

In this context, Gallego emphasized a crucial idea: «I do not believe Cuba is a threat to the United States; it is a very poor country with 9 million inhabitants.»

The Democratic senator further criticized the White House’s strategy of resorting to military force to impose political changes in Latin America.

«The United States should not start wars to overthrow governments,» warned Gallego, asserting that nearly 99% of elected Democrats oppose such a war. In conclusion, he made it clear: «Nothing gives the U.S. a license to topple governments.»

Lastly, the legislator compared the situation in Cuba to that of Venezuela, stressing that while military operations may seem «effective» in the short term, they fail politically when they merely replace one problem with another.
