Deputy Venegas Defends Socialist Bloc’s Decision to Challenge Kast’s ‘Reconstruction’ Law at Constitutional Court: ‘No Worse Reform Exists’

The acting head of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, Deputy Nelson Venegas, supported the unanimous decision of his fellow lawmakers to take Kast’s major reform to the Constitutional Court, describing it as a «legitimate and institutional tool» in response to the lack of substantial changes in the government’s proposal.

«Minister Quiroz, when he sits down to negotiate in the Senate, states that he will not change a whit of the core of the reform. That is not genuine negotiation,» Deputy Venegas said, asserting that this decision does not signify a division within the party or disrupt dialogue, but rather stems from the government’s unwillingness to engage in meaningful changes.

«Given the government’s lack of willingness to negotiate, we have no choice but to reaffirm our previously expressed intention to go to the Constitutional Court,» emphasized the PS legislator.

Venegas also criticized the content of the initiative, claiming the opposition had been open to discussion during the legislative process: «There is no worse reform that threatens the rights of the Chilean people in the last 30 years than the reform currently being proposed for approval,» he declared.

In a show of unity among all opposition factions, Venegas stated, «This is the message we are sending to the government: while the right is tearing itself apart, we are completely united to confront the government and its major reform. Let the Chilean people know that we are fully reunified and will challenge all reforms that prioritize the most powerful in this country,» concluded the PS deputy.
