«The Work of Grandmothers is Being Valued»: Mapuche Seed Guardian Claudia Mellado Ñancupil Receives Al Gore’s Award in Chile

Former Vice President of the United States and founder of The Climate Reality Project, Al Gore, concluded the Leadership Corps training in Santiago this Saturday by presenting the «Alfredo Sirkis Green Ring Award» to Claudia Mellado Ñancupil, co-founder and community engagement coordinator of the Biodiversity Food Foundation, as reported by ADPrensa.

The Green Ring Award, named in honor of Brazilian climate advocate Alfredo Sirkis, is one of the highest honors awarded by The Climate Reality Project, recognizing leaders showcasing exceptional commitment to climate education and advocacy. For three days, Chile hosted the 63rd Leadership Corps Training, where climate leaders and promoters were trained to contribute to the energy transition.

In the context of this international recognition, it has been highlighted that Claudia’s journey as a seed guardian and researcher began with ancestral knowledge passed down from her maternal grandparents. Driven by her passion, she visited gardens across Chile and connected with other grandmothers who preserve seeds as an act of remembrance and resistance. «This recognition is a tremendous honor for me, but above all, it signifies that the work of grandmothers is being valued,» Claudia stated, as noted by ADPrensa.

«They are the reason I continue on this path. Therefore, this award belongs to them. It is a recognition for those of us who conserve and protect traditional seeds, a vital task for climate resilience that is often overlooked,» she added. Phyllis Cuttino, President and Executive Director of The Climate Reality Project, emphasized that «her leadership is an astonishing representation of what it means to engage meaningfully with the community, history, and nature.”

During his closing presentation, Al Gore posed three questions to the audience: Should we change? Can we change? Will we change? He affirmed, «The answer to all these questions is yes.» The Nobel Peace Prize laureate urged the attending leaders to «use their voice, their vote, and their decisions to confront power with the truth.»

The Enraizar Foundation also highlighted this important recognition on social media: «Claudia’s work has been dedicated to protecting traditional seeds and Chile’s agri-food heritage, inspired by ancestral knowledge inherited from her grandparents and strengthened alongside communities and women seed guardians across various territories.»

The next Leadership Corps Training by The Climate Reality Project is scheduled for September in Singapore.
