Various European media reported on Monday, July 13, the launch of a campaign by the U.S. government aimed at dismantling the International Criminal Court (ICC), which, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, «represents an intolerable threat to U.S. sovereignty.»

«It claims the authority to prosecute and even imprison military personnel and officials acting in defense of the national interest of the United States,» stated Rubio, who also accused the ICC of «waging a war against our country, not with bullets or missiles, but with statutes, treaties, and the force of what they call international law.»

Rubio announced this campaign – described as a «diplomatic» effort – against the ICC, emphasizing that they will urge allied countries to withdraw from the entity, applying «extra pressure» on those who «enjoy» the «security umbrella of the United States.»

In this context, a report from the German channel DW noted that the U.S. is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, which established the ICC, and that the Trump administration «sanctioned senior court officials for investigating alleged war crimes committed by U.S. personnel in Afghanistan, and for acting against Israeli officials, a key ally of Washington.»

The same outlet also reported that this new campaign led by Rubio’s State Department aims to restrict the entry of ICC personnel into U.S. territory, as well as increase sanctions against its members and affiliated organizations.

In an opinion piece published in The Wall Street Journal, Rubio stated that with the assistance of allies, the United States will dismantle the ICC «brick by brick, if necessary.»
