Mil80 Theater Closes Its Doors Amid Economic Crisis Blamed on Javier Milei’s Policies

"People can't even afford a 2-for-1 deal. My income has dropped by 50%, and after paying royalties, actors, and operational expenses, there is virtually no margin left to sustain the theater," stated Javier Margulis, the founder of the theatrical space. Meanwhile, the Argentine Association of Independent Theater has warned that the situation "continues to worsen," detailing that nearly 10% of the independent theaters in the country have closed since Milei took office.

Mil80 Theater Closes Its Doors Amid Economic Crisis Blamed on Javier Milei’s Policies

With the final performance of the play «Picasso,» Mil80 Theater in Villa Crespo, Buenos Aires, has permanently shut its doors. This cultural venue adds to the growing list of initiatives, businesses, and projects that have fallen victim to the economic policies enforced by Javier Milei’s administration.

Founded by playwright and director Javier Margulis, the theater’s closure was announced in statements reported by El Destape, where he expressed, «Mil80 Theater is closing its curtains for good. We bid farewell to a dream that the current situation in our country has turned into a nightmare. We leave with more anger than sorrow. We depart more hurt than before, but stronger than ever.»

«People can’t even afford a 2-for-1 deal. My income has dropped by 50%, and after paying royalties, actors, and operational expenses, there is virtually no margin left to sustain the theater,» Margulis told the outlet.

He further noted that this year they stopped receiving government subsidies, which, combined with rising service costs, ultimately devastated their economic situation: «Thanks also to Leonardo Cifelli (Secretary of Culture of the Nation) and his beads, but obviously also to Javier Milei, the ogre puppet who entertains us while destroying,» the artist sarcastically remarked.

Meanwhile, the Argentine Association of Independent Theater (ARTEI) warned that the industry’s situation «continues to worsen,» detailing that since Milei took office, nearly 10% of the country’s independent theaters have closed.
