A «highly productive» meeting took place between leaders of the Confederation of Chilean Students (Confech) and their counterparts from the Unitary Central of Workers (CUT), aimed at sharing assessments and constructing a common agenda to address the government’s labor reform.
From the student organization, it was reported that the discussions focused on two main objectives: uniting forces against the labor precarization disguised as flexibility, and creating a permanent nationwide network.
Regarding the first point, they criticized the government’s agenda, stating that «under the pretense of creating jobs, it actually undermines the country’s workers and severely punishes Chilean youth.»
«Projects like the adaptability of work hours and hourly contracts directly affect sectors where youth employment is concentrated (tourism, commerce, hospitality, and gastronomy). In this context, they highlighted the need to create dialogue and pressure towards actors like the People’s Party (PDG), a key sector that has been voting alongside the ruling party, to prevent the advancement of regulations that violate labor rights,» Confech representatives stated.
The second point is to «establish a continuous network between students, workers, and all available organizations, to uplift local expressions of joint work in each region of the country,» aiming to develop sustained joint planning, like open forums and informational campaigns, «to defend the rights of the Chilean people and to take the offensive rather than simply responding to legislative events.»
For Santiago Pimentel, president of Feuah and Confech spokesperson, «the only way to face the government’s offensive against the social rights of students, workers, and families is by coordinating actions together. Today we see a clear attempt to roll back our rights through the legislative agenda; therefore, the central focus of this meeting is to respond with a common agenda that defends our achievements and halts these reforms from advancing.»
Similarly, Laura Mlynarz, president of FECH and Confech spokesperson, expressed, «As students and workers, we cannot allow the government to disguise precarization as flexibility. The adaptability projects and hourly contracts directly impact youth, imposing uncertain work hours that make it impossible to balance our studies with work, generating distressing uncertainty about our income.»
«Today, we unite with CUT because the defense of decent employment is a single cause, and we call directly on Parliament, especially factions like the People’s Party: do not be complicit in an agenda that mortgages the future and rights of Chilean youth,» added the student leader.
