Lawmaker Cuello Criticizes Interior Minister for Personal Gain from Contribution Exemptions

Lawmaker Luis Cuello (PC) has taken issue with Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado (pictured) after the minister publicly admitted to benefiting from the universal exemption of contributions included in the «mega-reform», a benefit that significantly surpasses the one-time payment of up to $1.5 million offered by the Government to families affected by the recent storm.

«According to the minister’s declaration of interests and assets, his primary residence is a property located in the commune of Castro, with a tax assessment of $450,000,400,» the parliamentarian detailed.

Cuello further noted that this property, «will incur an annual territorial tax of $3,744,034 for 2026, which is equivalent to four quarterly payments of $936,009 each, from which he would be exempt once the law comes into effect.»

«I find this unacceptable and indicative that the Superrich Law was tailored not only for large business owners but also for cabinet members who actively and enthusiastically participated in its processing,» criticized the legislator from Valparaíso.

«While a family severely impacted by the storm can receive up to $1.5 million to aid in their recovery, Minister Alvarado could save almost $4 million every year due to the contribution exemption promoted by his government,» emphasized Cuello.

«And let’s not be told that this is to protect the elderly. A targeted benefit based on income and assets already exists. This reform simply extends it to individuals with properties valued in the hundreds of millions of pesos,» the congressman added.
