Puente Alto Mayor Matías Toledo confronted presidential delegate for the Metropolitan Region (RM) Germán Codina this Wednesday, accusing him of staging a «mediatic show on security and of neglecting police presence in local communities.
The mayor attended a police operation organized outside the Las Mercedes metro station, where Codina was present alongside Security Minister Martín Arrau, an event announced to the press.
Upon arriving at the enforcement activity monitoring drivers and workers, the mayor lashed out at the regional authority for the absence of a security strategy in Puente Alto and the lack of prior coordination with the municipality.
«Your responsibility is security; you are the delegate. Here is the presidential delegate once again evading accountability,» Toledo stated.
«Well, once again the Security Minister came to Puente Alto, and the Mayor wasn’t informed; they held a spectacle, stopping at the metro station while we face serious problems in our communities. We have only four police officers per shift at each police station; we’ve requested more officers, yet they don’t come, instead hiring people to shout and put on a show here, notifying us at six in the morning that they will conduct vehicle checks for people heading to work,» expressed Mayor Toledo in a video shared on his social media.
He pointed out that the municipality constantly struggles with issues like drug trafficking, rape, and kidnapping, with criminal gangs such as the Aragua Train operating in the area, all amid the government’s inaction under José Antonio Kast.
«It is we who are doing the work that they are responsible for every day, without asking what the problems, concerns, or pains of Puente Alto’s residents regarding safety and crime are. Today, that is solely their responsibility. We say it loud and clear; we can’t keep doing their job while all Chileans pay them for that,» the mayor asserted in a message accompanying his video.

As seen in the video, a dialogue ensued that escalated in tension until the mayor confronted both Codina and Arrau.
«It’s unacceptable that the minister comes to Puente Alto again without meeting with the mayor of Chile’s largest municipality,» the regional chief stated, while the presidential delegate urged him to «do your job as mayor, instead of being here putting on a show for social media.
In response, Toledo fired back: «You met with the minister, and what did you come to do? Just stand here at the metro station while we have serious issues in the communities?»
As the video concluded, the mayor of Puente Alto directed his comments to Codina and Arrau as they left the area, demanding they fulfill their duties and effectively manage the police.
«Do your job; the responsibility of the presidential delegate is to manage the police. And they are not doing that work, for which they are paid. Not just to show up once every four months at six in the morning, hidden away. The work must happen in the streets, in the neighborhoods, facing drug trafficking and offenders, and not on morning talk shows as they are used to doing,» he asserted.
