The Coquimbo Prosecutor’s Office, in collaboration with the Carabineros’ OS9 unit, has formally charged two individuals for unjustified gunfire against a public building (the Coquimbo City Hall), along with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and property damage.
According to the Public Ministry, the investigation into the incidents that occurred on July 30 «led to the identification of two alleged perpetrators, who were arrested and charged.»
During the hearing, Coquimbo’s chief prosecutor, Claudio Correa, presented the charges against both suspects, while prosecutor Juan González outlined the precautionary measures.
As per the formal charges, the individuals reportedly traveled in a vehicle along Avenida Costanera to the ruins of the Mercado del Mar, where they exited the car armed with 9mm handguns and allegedly fired multiple shots, causing damages estimated at 500,000 pesos to the thermolaminated windows of the municipal building.
It was also reported that one shot did not penetrate a window, while another struck a window and parts of the eighth floor.
As a result of these actions, both suspects remain in preventive detention at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, and the Guarantee Court granted a 90-day period for the investigation’s continuation.
Prosecutor Claudio Correa stated that crucial evidence is being gathered: «The most significant evidence includes ballistic analyses of the bullet trajectories, as well as footage from surveillance cameras, which were reviewed from the area shortly before, during, and after the shooting, in addition to witness statements that could be identified,» said the prosecutor.
It is worth noting that Coquimbo’s mayor, Ali Manouchehri, reported on July 31 that the municipal building had sustained three bullet impacts, as previously reported by El Ciudadano.
