Deputy Cristian Tapia raised concerns regarding the government’s submission of a constitutional security reform proposal to the Senate, arguing that this initiative aims to grant the current authorities a true «blank check.»
«We have learned that the government has submitted this security reform to the Senate, which is alarming because what President Kast and Minister Arrau intend is to have military forces at their disposal, to impose curfews as they see fit, meaning they want us to give them a blank check for more than 240 days of constitutional exceptions, and to change, modify, and decide who gets detained, as well as conduct document checks,» the deputy criticized.
In this regard, Deputy Tapia emphasized that as the opposition, «we are open to working on security matters; we are not distant from that. But let’s first sit down and talk, review the proposal because it’s not just us who disagree: even people from the ruling party are opposed to this measure,» he stressed.
«If the President or Minister Arrau tells us, ‘let’s have a process for the military to secure the roads, where organized crime and drug trafficking occur,’ then fine, we would approve that tomorrow, just like for critical infrastructure, hospitals, access to communities; we will approve that,» the legislator stated.
«The Government Should Reflect»
Given all of this, Deputy Cristian Tapia expressed hope that the government «reflects. I hope they do not take away people’s freedoms, because this project will, in some way, take away individuals’ liberties.»
«What we want is to go after drug traffickers, pursue organized crime, and ensure that the people of our country live safely: on all of these initiatives, we will be on board,» the deputy insisted.
