Former Presidents Gabriel Boric and Michelle Bachelet voiced their concerns regarding the Kast administration’s joining of the so-called «Shield of the Americas,» a project spearheaded by the Trump administration in the United States, stating that «in the current geopolitical landscape, Chile should not be forced to choose a side.»
In a joint statement released on Thursday, September 24, the ex-presidents emphasized that «Chile’s foreign policy has historically been based on defending our sovereignty and autonomy, strict adherence to international law and human rights, and protecting our enduring interests.»
«International cooperation is essential to address transnational threats such as organized crime. However, this cooperation must always fully safeguard Chile’s decision-making autonomy and not subordinate our foreign, security, or defense policies to priorities defined by a foreign power,» they stressed.
The former leaders expressed concern that concepts like «continental sovereignty» could potentially «weaken the fundamental principle of national sovereignty that our country has historically defended.»
Given these points, Bachelet and Boric called on «President José Antonio Kast’s government to reconsider Chile’s participation in this initiative and we express our full willingness to collaborate in developing state strategies to combat transnational organized crime, while also safeguarding the principles, sovereignty, and autonomy that have characterized Chilean foreign policy since the restoration of democracy.»
