«Legal Abortion Represents Social Justice» is the slogan with which the 8M Feminist Coordinator has called for a National Rally this Monday, September 28, coinciding with the global day of action for legal, free, and safe abortion.
The organization criticized that, nearly a decade after the approval of Law 21.030, published on September 23, 2017, which regulates voluntary termination of pregnancy in three exceptional cases: fetal impairment, pregnancy resulting from rape, and risk to the mother’s life, the Chilean state continues to force thousands of women and girls into secrecy.
«On this September 28, the global day of action for abortion, we are once again taking to the streets to demand legal, safe, and free abortion for all causes and without discrimination. We are mobilizing because the state of Chile continues to compel thousands of women and girls to resort to clandestine options in the 21st century,» they stated in a public declaration.
The Coordinator warned that this situation worsens due to threats to hard-won rights and pointed out that alongside the criminalization and persecution of those who have abortions and assist in abortions, the ‘listen to their heartbeats’ bill, presented by far-right deputies, now requires medical personnel to compel girls and women who terminate their pregnancy under any of the three causes to listen to fetal heartbeats before accessing the procedure.
They described this initiative, currently in the Health Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, as a «dehumanizing punishment against those who have been victims of rape, have non-viable pregnancies, or whose lives are at risk».
«We are mobilizing because the penalization of abortion forces women and pregnant individuals who cannot afford to terminate pregnancies in private clinics or abroad into clandestine procedures that put their lives at risk,» the organization asserted.
The Minister of Women and Gender Equity, Judith Marín, was also criticized by members of the Coordinator, who stated that she «supports and defends projects that threaten our rights!».
«Her proposals do not aim to expand sexual and reproductive rights but rather the opposite, deepening social injustice and advancing a normative framework against women. The promotion of the anti-denunciation law is a concrete expression of this policy, adding new barriers and threats for those who report violence,» they denounced in the text.
They also recalled that although the sale of all types of medications is penalized in the country for health reasons, for the government party this is not sufficient when it comes to abortion, «as it promotes a bill that seeks to criminalize and punish with imprisonment all actions facilitating access to abortion medications.»
«With this, they seek to eliminate networks of solidarity and push thousands of women once again into practices that endanger their lives. We demand that Minister (Marín) act in accordance with her mandate: eliminate all forms of arbitrary discrimination against women,» they stated.
From the 8M Feminist Coordinator, they warned that President José Antonio Kast’s government will continue seeking ways to impose an ultra-conservative view on a right that is a public health issue and noted that four out of ten doctors are conscientious objectors in cases of rape, along with the lack of training, infrastructure obstacles, and the demand for «credibility of the narrative».
«That IVE (interruption of voluntary pregnancy) be accessible in primary care is the way for the law to reach those who need it most,» they maintained.
Members of the feminist group stated that the persecution of abortion and restriction of sexual rights is not an isolated policy but part of a far-right plan for the Latin American region, articulated from the United States and aligned with the agenda of former President Donald Trump.
Nevertheless, they made it clear that «feminists are also an international force» and will defend their lives in the streets, «facing together their policies of control and misery.»
«On September 28, we go out together because justice is not requested: it is demanded!», they emphasized.
National Rally
Under the slogan «Legal Abortion Represents Social Justice», the National Rally will take place on September 28 in Santiago, starting at 6:00 PM at Plaza Dignidad (Baquedano metro station).
