Lula Agrees to Flávio Bolsonaro’s Demands, Challenges Him to Lift Banking and Phone Secrecy Ahead of Election Runoff

The campaign team of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has confirmed that the Brazilian president has accepted the demands posed by Flávio Bolsonaro, the far-right candidate from the Liberal Party, and has challenged him to lift his banking and phone secrecy before the electoral runoff scheduled for this Sunday, July 25.

«Regarding all the conditions he [Flávio] has set, the president’s response is that he opposes nothing he proposes, as long as he fulfills and discloses everything stated in the request submitted to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE),» said Camilo Santana, campaign coordinator for the leader of the Workers’ Party (PT), at a press conference.

It’s worth noting that the progressive leader authorized access to both his banking and phone records as well as those of his family members, and has demanded the same from his opponent.

Lula has requested explanations regarding the 134 million reais (US$24 million, at the time) that Flávio negotiated with Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, who is currently detained and under investigation for a financial fraud scheme, to finance «Dark Horse,» a film about former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest after being sentenced to 27 years in prison in September 2025 for his role in an attempted coup to maintain power and prevent Lula from assuming office following the 2022 elections.

According to documents and messages revealed by Intercept Brasil, at least 61 million reais (US$10.6 million) may have been disbursed.

So far, no public and detailed account has been presented that clarifies the final destination of those funds.

The PT team has set Thursday at 11:00 AM (local time) as the deadline for Bolsonaro to disclose his financial data, as well as that of his close circle.

“That is the deadline for him to be present and provide all his banking and phone records. He cannot wait until after the elections,” Santana emphasized, as reported by TeleSUR.

Both candidates participated in a presidential debate last Sunday, where the current president challenged the far-right senator in front of television cameras to disclose his accounts and those of his associates, aiming to clarify “who is honest and who is a thief.”

Following the debate, Lula submitted a formal authorization to the electoral body to release his data, along with that of his wife and children. However, Bolsonaro stated that he would only comply with the president’s request if the review also included individuals linked to the Government.

These demands were accepted by the leader of the Workers’ Party, who ensured access to the financial records of former chief of staff Marco Aurélio Santana Ribeiro, as well as those of his brother José Ferreira da Silva, and the record of access by businesswoman Roberta Luchsinger to the Presidential Palace.

The president’s campaign team, which is seeking re-election, expressed its discontent with the delays in which the far-right candidate is allowing a review of his banking transactions and phone records.

“If he owes nothing, he should have accepted President Lula’s challenge last Sunday,” Santana said.
