Brazil Government and Chamber of Deputies Strike Historic Deal to Reduce Weekly Work Hours from 44 to 40 and Eliminate 6×1 Work Schedule

The Federal Government of Brazil and the Chamber of Deputies have reached a historic agreement to reduce the weekly work hours from 44 to 40 within one year, and to abolish the 6×1 work schedule, which consists of six working days followed by one day off.

According to Brazilian media reports, the President of the Chamber, Hugo Motta, explained that the transition to this policy will begin sixty days after the enactment of the Constitutional Amendment Proposal, noting that prior approval from both chambers of the Congress is necessary.

From the government’s perspective, Minister of Institutional Relations, José Guimaraes, emphasized the agreement stating it is «another victory achieved through the struggle of the Brazilian people (…) A historic agenda in defense of dignity, quality of life, and the rights of the working class».

Guimaraes detailed that the proposal includes an initial reduction of working hours from 44 to 42 per week within 60 days. After this period, the immediate replacement of the 6×1 regime with the 5×2 scheme will be implemented, a long-standing demand of Brazilian unions.

Then, after twelve months, the working hours will decrease to 40 hours per week, equivalent to 8 hours a day over 5 working days.
