«It’s Absurd That the Wealthiest Individuals Don’t Pay Taxes»: Mayor Tamayo
«It’s absurd that the wealthiest individuals in our country don’t pay taxes,» stated Cerro Navia’s Mayor Mauro Tamayo in an interview with ElSiglo.cl published on June 14, 2026. This remark came in response to the government’s intention led by José Antonio Kast to eliminate property taxes for homeowners over 65 years old. Tamayo cautioned that «this exemption cannot be universal for everyone,» warning that municipalities would face a loss of approximately 200 million dollars.
The mayor elaborated on the direct consequences of budget cuts on health services. He highlighted that in the Metropolitan Western Health Service, which includes Cerro Navia, primary care faced a reduction of 1.6 billion pesos, while the Félix Bulnes Hospital saw cuts of 1.342 billion pesos. Tamayo stated, «The sole person responsible for this is José Antonio Kast, due to his ideological vision seeking to reduce the state and diminish resources for better public health.»
On the topic of public safety, the mayor did not hold back: «The State of Chile, and I want to be very responsible in what I’m saying, has been complicit in drug trafficking and organized crime, and has not been able to develop concrete strategies.» He revealed that, in Cerro Navia, «we haven’t even finished the first half of 2026, and we’ve already seen the same number of homicides as all of 2025,» giving the current government’s performance a failing grade due to its broken promises to eradicate organized crime and ensure family safety.
Tamayo contrasted the treatment of banking secrecy based on social sectors. He noted, «It’s striking that for borrowers of the State Guaranteed Credit (CAE), the lifting of banking secrecy is effective; their finances are scrutinized and even seized, but not for traffickers.» He added that «countries that have successfully eradicated criminal gangs do so with political will, yet in Chile, fear is a political choice.»
The mayor announced plans with fellow mayors Fares Jadue (Recoleta), Ítalo Bravo (Pudahuel), Joel Olmos (La Cisterna), and Paulina Bobadilla (Quilicura) to develop «a simple, yet strategic and concrete proposal» to submit to the government aimed at eradicating organized crime in their communities. He also suggested differentiating consumers from traffickers and proposed decriminalizing medicinal cannabis, following examples set by Colombia and the United States.
In closing, Tamayo linked the current administration to the dictatorship: «The unfinished task of Augusto Pinochet is what José Antonio Kast is finalizing; let people not be deceived.» He warned, «the government has openly told us, ‘We are at ease because there are no elections for the next two years.'»
