Former Security Minister Luis Cordero responded to José Antonio Kast, who claimed in an interview that during Gabriel Boric’s administration «all indices have risen.» Cordero firmly countered, saying, «The facts contradict the President, and his statements are at least inaccurate.»
The state secretary questioned the quality of data available to the president, suggesting that «he has probably not been shown the information accurately.»
In a conversation with CNN Chile, Cordero labeled Kast’s claims as «rhetorical excess» and reminded listeners that «the first policy on organized crime was implemented during Gabriel Boric’s administration,» asserting that «any figure you consider shows a decline in the data.»
«Rhetorical excesses often lead to consequences later,» he warned, alluding to the political costs the far-right leader could face due to his rhetoric surrounding security issues.
The former state secretary also commented on the Unique Registry of Vandals, an initiative promoted by La Moneda. He cautioned that proposed administrative punishments, such as the «permanent loss of benefits,» could be unconstitutional.
«Be aware,» the ex-minister emphasized, in statements reported by El Mostrador.
Campaign Security Plan, Not Government Security Strategy
During the interview, Cordero diagnosed a fundamental problem in the current administration, stating that they had a «campaign security plan, but not a government security strategy.»
«These are very different things,» he pointed out, referring to the lack of strategic development that he believes explains the missteps in one of the most sensitive areas for citizens.
Regarding the recent cabinet changes under Kast, Cordero criticized the efforts of now-former Security Minister Trinidad Steiner, whom he claimed approached the role «as an extension of the prosecutor’s role.»
In his view, this was the cause of her failure, as he stated that «the Ministry of Security cannot operate as a prosecuting authority,» and noted that the current Minister, Martín Arrau, «understands security as a matter of the state» rather than just a government policy.

The former minister also tackled other controversies. Regarding the order to relocate three common prisoners from the Til Til Penitentiary—previously Punta Peuco—he indicated that «if the President had intervened, it would have been irregular,” asserting that “he cannot issue orders to Gendarmería.»
On the possibility of the far-right president pardoning criminals for crimes against humanity, he remarked that it is «curious for him to use this power he criticized so much,» reminding that «the weight of history falls on the President exercising this power.»
