Health Unions Applaud Senate Committee’s Unanimous Rejection of Budget Cuts

The rejection request was formally presented by the committee president, Senator Juan Luis Castro (PS), after receiving technical reports from health workers, the Medical Association, and other professional organizations. This temporarily suspends the application of the budget cut and opens a space for technical discussions between the Legislative Power and the Government's economic team.

The Senate Health Committee has unanimously decided to reject the 2.5% budget cut mandated by the Ministry of Finance for the Health portfolio. This decision was made after a session that included presentations from various health sector unions and organizations.

As a result, the implementation of the budget cut is temporarily suspended, paving the way for technical discussions between the Legislative Power and the Government’s economic team, a move positively regarded by health officials.

The rejection request was formally presented by the committee president, Senator Juan Luis Castro (PS), after receiving technical reports from health workers, the Medical Association, and other professional organizations that expressed concerns about the potential impact of a budget reduction exceeding 413 billion pesos on the public health system.

According to the data presented by the unions, the financial adjustment could lead to increased wait times and difficulties in the supply of clinical materials and health support programs, as reported by El Ciudadano (see the article here).

During the session, Government Undersecretary for Health Networks, Julio Montt, assured the Committee that budget adjustments would focus on specific areas and would not affect direct patient care services in the public health sector.

However, due to the absence of representatives from the Budget Directorate (Dipres), the Committee decided to formally summon the Minister of Finance, Jorge Quiroz, to explain the financial rationale behind the cuts at the beginning of next month.

Fenats’ Perspective

After the session, representatives of the health workers expressed reservations about the government’s projections.

The president of the Confederation of Fenats Unitaria, Ricardo Ruiz Escalona, indicated that while they appreciate Health Minister’s efforts to reduce the initial cut from 3% to 2.5%, concerns remain among the staff regarding the operational effects on personnel replacements and the flow of medications for patients benefiting from the public network.

Legislative discussions are set to resume on June 4, when the Senate Health Committee will jointly invite Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz, Health Minister May Chomali, and officials from the Budget Directorate to assess the feasibility of the economic adjustment and ensure the operational continuity of emergency services and the country’s hospital network.

Fenats has warned that the financial cuts driven by Kast could leave hospitals without resources by August.
