In a unified effort, the National Federation of Nurses and Nursing Associations (Fenasenf), alongside Fenpruss, Fenats Nacional, and Confedeprus, delivered a letter to President José Antonio Kast at the La Moneda Palace on Monday, April 6, expressing their deep concern over the proposed 3% cut to the Health Ministry’s budget.
The organizations cautioned that this measure, amounting to over 517 billion Chilean pesos, is placed upon a system that is already operating under structural constraints, facing high demand for services and maximum pressure on human resources.
Present at the meeting were deputies Matías Fernández, Boris Barrera, Consuelo Veloso, Marco Barraza, and Senator Juan Luis Castro.
The unions asserted that the proposed 2026 budget reflects insufficient nominal growth, which in real terms equates to stagnation, set against the backdrop of increasing wait lists, rising operational costs, and sustained pressure on the public network.
Furthermore, they noted that significant resources were needed in 2025 to ensure the system’s functionality, indicating that the current funds are inadequate to meet the real needs of the population.
«This adjustment does not affect a system with available resources, but one that is already functioning at its limits. Reducing the budget under these conditions leads to less care, longer wait lists, and greater burdens on healthcare workers, but most importantly impacts the patients directly,» warned the president of Fenasenf, Fernanda Mora.
The organization emphasized that the discussion should not revolve around cuts, but rather on strengthening the public health system, clearly stating that «healthcare should not be cut; it should be strengthened.»
