Palestinian photojournalist Saher Alghorra has been awarded the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in the «Breaking News Photography» category for his courageous and impactful documentation of the genocide perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
According to various international media outlets, among the prize-winning photographs is one depicting a Palestinian mother with her injured child after they were shot while seeking help; the demolition of a skyscraper in Gaza City; the urgent transfer of an injured child to a hospital; and several images of displaced families celebrating Ramadan.
Upon receiving the news of his accolade, Alghorra shared an emotional message on his Instagram and Facebook accounts, stating he feels «deeply honored to have won a Pulitzer Prize in breaking news photography, for documenting the toll of Israel’s attacks in Gaza for The New York Times.»
«In a world where the truth seems to matter less and less, we, the photographers and journalists in Gaza, faced violence and risked our lives to document the unbearable reality we were witnessing. I still don’t have the words to fully express what we saw and experienced. But my camera captured fragments of it, and sometimes images speak more eloquently than words,» said Saher Alghorra.
The photojournalist further remarked that «perhaps this is a time to reflect on the necessity of journalism, the integrity of reporting, and the sacred freedom of the press as fundamental pillars of democracy. These are not abstract or empty words. In Gaza, we lived these principles under the most extreme conditions.»
At this juncture, Alghorra expressed astonishment at the human body and mind’s ability to withstand such levels of violence and fear, yet continue moving forward. «I still can’t make sense of it all,» he said.
«We must all be living in a state of shock, running on adrenaline. The camera became the only tangible asset anchoring me to reality. We were suffering ourselves, wondering if we would live to see this end. Sometimes wishing it would all just stop. But there was always an instinct, a sense of purpose, the feeling that if we didn’t do this, no one would,» stated the 2026 Pulitzer winner, who dedicated his prize to his «brave colleagues, both living and dead.»
