President Sheinbaum Upholds Mexico’s Support for Bachelet’s UN Candidacy During Meeting

On Friday, May 15, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, reiterating her country’s endorsement of Bachelet’s candidacy for the UN Secretary-General position.

«I welcomed Michelle Bachelet. A brilliant woman, two-time president of Chile, and a promoter of peace through development and justice,» Sheinbaum remarked in a social media post, recalling Mexico’s previous announcement of support for Bachelet’s bid to lead the United Nations.

According to Mexican media, the meeting took place at the National Palace. Prior to this, Bachelet had visited the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, where she met with Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry explained that the meeting was part of Mexico’s backing for Bachelet’s candidacy, which is supported alongside Brazil as part of the country’s commitment to strengthen a multilateralism characterized by leadership, experience, and adherence to international law, always oriented towards peace and the well-being of peoples.

Additionally, they exchanged insights on the challenges of the multilateral agenda and the current role of the UN in the international context.
