Students Protest Against Kast Government Amid Heavy Police Repression with Tear Gas and Water Cannons

This Wednesday, students took to the streets to protest against the government of José Antonio Kast and his budget cuts, which impact the Ministry of Health and affect the development of school programs. The protests prompted a heavy-handed response from Carabineros, resulting in several arrests and the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators.

The marches were organized by the Confederation of Students of Chile (Confech), occurring in Santiago and various cities nationwide, aiming to empower the student movement to defend their rights and demand concrete responses to their claims.

Social media accounts, including Piensa Prensa, have shared footage showing students being violently suppressed by law enforcement as they protest against the cuts implemented by the right-wing president.

One of the shared images captures the moment a police officer detains a student participating in the march in downtown Santiago, who appears visibly injured and bloodied, while others are being gassed by the police against a group of protesters.

Piensa Prensa also reported that armed police have been using supposedly trained dogs to disperse students regrouping in front of the La Moneda Palace, the Gabriela Mistral Center (GAM), and Baquedano Square, also known as Plaza Dignidad.

University students are also facing repression from Carabineros, who charged at a group positioned in front of the Law School of the University of Chile on Pío Nono.
