The Regional Governor of Valparaíso, Rodrigo Mundaca, met with residents of El Olivar affected by the major fire of 2024, who are facing potential demolition of their homes as part of a project announced by Housing Minister, Iván Poduje.
Community representatives presented their concerns to the regional authority, detailing a legal action recently filed in the Supreme Court to halt the demolitions, following two technical reports recommending the reinforcement of 56 homes.
After the meeting, Mundaca stated, «We are aware of the judicial actions taken by community representatives aiming to restrain this intention expressed by Housing Minister, Iván Poduje, to demolish 56 homes. We also question the cost of demolition versus the expense of reinforcing these residences without the need for demolition.»
Additionally, the Valparaíso Governor elaborated on the communication sent on April 27 to the General Comptroller of the Republic, requesting an official statement regarding the demolition measure adopted by the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism.
«We held a meeting with the General Comptroller, Dorothy Pérez, and highlighted our need for her to provide a statement on this decision being considered by the ministry to demolish 56 homes in El Olivar. On April 27, we submitted an official request to Dorothy Pérez to clarify the legal conformity of such a decision,» Mundaca detailed.
Finally, the regional authority emphasized the need for transparency in resolving this situation and delivering a real, definitive solution to the residents affected by the fire in El Olivar, Viña del Mar.
