Abdul El-Sayed achieved a historic electoral victory in Michigan after a campaign characterized by his opposition to U.S. military aid to Israel. The progressive candidate defeated Republican Mike Rogers, endorsed by Donald Trump, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate in one of the most closely watched races during the midterm elections.

This triumph marks a significant gain for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, succeeding in a politically competitive state with a platform that openly challenged U.S. military support for Israel while endorsing social proposals that diverge from traditional Washington positions.

An epidemiologist and the son of an Egyptian exile, El-Sayed highlighted universal healthcare, critique of corporate power, and rejection of Israeli military funding as key themes of his campaign.

Abdul El-Sayed: A Left-Wing Victory Against Military Aid to Israel

According to Radio France International (RFI), El-Sayed aimed to demonstrate that it was possible to win by advocating leftist positions, even in a state where the competition between Democrats and Republicans tends to be tight.

However, his candidacy also faced resistance within the Democratic Party itself. In the final stretch, Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who was defeated by El-Sayed in the primaries, announced her support for Republican Mike Rogers.

Despite this crossover support and the presidential backing for Rogers, the progressive candidate’s victory was secure, as his campaign galvanized committed activists advocating for social reform and questioning the power of large corporations.

In remarks reported by RFI, Jared Guerrero Salinas, a U.S. Army veteran who participated in the campaign, praised the candidate’s leadership: “He’s a true professional, a leader with overwhelming charisma. And that’s exactly what we need to represent Michigan in the Senate and to contribute to the fight against oligarchy.”

Over 50 Victories for DSA: The Left Expands Its Electoral Presence

El-Sayed’s victory came on a day that also marked progress for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), an organization advocating for economic and social transformations from the U.S. left.

According to an assessment released by DSA on their X account, over 50 candidates affiliated with the organization achieved victories in the elections held on November 3rd.

Notable results include wins in the House of Representatives, state legislatures, and local governments, reflecting an electoral presence that transcends major national disputes.

While El-Sayed did not receive formal support from DSA nor identifies as a democratic socialist, he was backed by prominent progressives such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

His victory, alongside the wins of DSA-backed candidates, opens a new scenario for left-leaning sectors in the United States. El-Sayed’s arrival in the Senate brings a critical voice regarding military support for Israel, while other progressive figures expand their institutional representation.

The challenge will be to see how these results can translate into concrete changes within a political system where large fortunes, corporate interests, and lobbying groups wield considerable influence over the decisions made in Washington.
