Former government spokesperson Camila Vallejo delivered a strong indictment of José Antonio Kast’s administration, highlighting the social costs of his agenda that prioritizes the wealthy at the expense of the working class, describing his electoral promises regarding security as a «scam».
«We are governed by an ultraright regime, similar to (Javier) Milei, (Donald) Trump, and (Jair) Bolsonaro,» she warned during an interview with the podcast Animales Políticos, hosted by journalists Daniel Matamala and Cristóbal Bellolio.
The former official noted a common agenda among ultraright movements globally and remarked that Kast implements several of these strategies, albeit with «obviously different styles».
«Kast has a more sober approach, but the fundamental agenda is quite similar,» she pointed out.
Her sharpest criticisms emerged when discussing security, the primary focus of Kast’s successful presidential campaign.
«I believe there was indeed a major scam, the promise of security,» she asserted.
According to Vallejo, Kast’s commitment to reducing the homicide rate served as the «bait» to gain votes.
«The promise that they would drastically decrease homicides was what drove many to vote for Kast,» she stated, yet upon reaching La Moneda, his administration revealed improvisation and a lack of concrete results.
«In the end, it was all improvisation and a promise that has yet to be fulfilled,» she emphasized.
Vallejo: «Costs Shifted to the People»
On economic matters, the former minister in Gabriel Boric’s government was equally incisive in describing the social impact of the measures enacted by Kast’s administration.
«We are talking about a government agenda that places one class above another, specifically the powerful class against the working class,» she denounced, citing the so-called «bencinazo» that spiked fuel prices to historic levels, changes to the 40-hour workweek law, and modifications to severance pay.
She argued that from the current government’s perspective, the social costs of the proposed economic-tax agenda must be borne by the working class to benefit the wealthy.
«Costs are being shifted to the people, and that is what individuals are experiencing,» Vallejo asserted, as reported by ADN.
Anti-Abortion Project Hides a «Deep Hatred of Women»
In the interview, the former minister also addressed the ongoing national debate on the anti-abortion project promoted by ultraright lawmakers, which requires women to listen to the fetal heartbeat before undergoing a legal abortion.
She labeled the initiative «Listen to Its Heart» as extreme, warning that while it has caused public outrage, it may become normalized.
«We all were shocked. But then we move to the phase of ‘let’s talk about it.’ It will become normalized, believe me, and they have already shifted the boundaries. What matters is the fetus, not the woman, so they will legitimize this in the event of rape,» she stated.
For the former congresswoman, what lies behind this discussion is not a defense of children’s lives, since if it were, the ultraright lawmakers would be defending the lives of Palestinian children, of migrant children.
In her view, the controversial project is a facade to mask a «deep hatred of women» and their rights and freedoms, as the representatives of this political sector are «deeply misogynistic.»
