Chilean Congressman Olivares Faces Outrage After ‘Viva Mi General’ Chant and Assault Allegations in Olmué

Congressman Javier Olivares (PDG) has sparked a new controversy after shouting «Viva mi general» in Congress and facing accusations of glorifying the dictatorship. Over the weekend, he reported being assaulted in the Olmué commune.

The Valparaíso Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation following the complaint about an incident that occurred around 12:25 AM on Sunday during the celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the Montevideo Sports Club.

According to regional prosecutor of Instruction and Flagging, Daniela Quevedo, the legislator stated that he was present at the venue with his Chief of Staff and an advisor when an unknown individual punched him in the face.

Immediately afterward, Olivares was taken outside the club where the same individual, accompanied by another, allegedly pushed him to the ground to strike him again. His advisor was reportedly assaulted as he tried to intervene, as reported by ADN.

The Prosecutor’s Office instructed that both men be taken to a healthcare facility to assess their injuries and to collect statements from witnesses to identify the assailants.

From the media and communications office of the congressman, it was revealed that the assailant reportedly shouted “The left always lives” while attacking him.

In a statement shared on social media, they expressed their «strongest condemnation» of the incident, while Olivares asserted that “the extreme left’s political violence will not silence my convictions.”

Olivares’ Cape Evokes Pinochet as He Shouts «Viva mi General»

It is important to note that the PDG congressman has been involved in significant controversies within Congress. One of these erupted on Wednesday, May 6, after he attended a meeting dressed in a dark Prussian cape, buttoned at the top with golden clasps and accompanied by a red collar, very similar to that worn by dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Upon arriving at the Chamber’s dining room, Olivares began shouting «Viva mi general» in front of Congresswoman Lorena Pizarro (PC).

«This guy walks around dressed as Pinochet, and shouts ‘viva mi general’ in front of us, being I the daughter of a forcibly disappeared person, and I was with María Candelaria, daughter of Sebastián Acevedo. I confronted him and this ‘honorable’ just focused on mocking me,” the parliamentarian stated in a message shared on her social media, which included a photo of herself confronting Olivares.

Later, the legislator shared the same photo on his own networks, edited with speech bubbles, mocking Pizarro.

Following these events, deputies from the Communist Party and independents called for all disciplinary measures against Olivares, stating that “he not only attacked the dignity of a parliamentarian but also violated historical memory.”

We will not accept that denialism or especially the glorification of the dictatorship becomes acceptable practices in the National Congress,” they affirmed in a public statement.

In March, he had already caused controversy during a TV interview when asked about wearing such capes and responded: “I dress how I want”.

Weeks later, he was confronted by Congresswoman Consuelo Veloso (IND-FA), who questioned whether wearing the garment could be interpreted as a reference to the military regime. This is a sensitive issue, as there are legislators in the Chamber who, along with their families, are victims of the dictatorship.
