The Chilean Network of Journalists and Communicators Friends of Cuba «Diana Arón» has released a public statement calling for an end to the media silence surrounding the «criminal siege» against the Cuban people.
This pronouncement comes in light of the upcoming vote at the United Nations General Assembly regarding the resolution demanding an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.
In this context, the Diana Arón Network emphasized that «the indispensable role of journalism is not to please the authorities, but to provide citizens with rigorous, truthful information with historical depth.»
Furthermore, they condemned «the active complicity of media monopolies that impose a wall of silence or disguise it under the false euphemism of ‘bilateral embargo’—what international law unequivocally defines as a deliberate economic war, asymmetrical and of extraterritorial reach against the sovereignty of the Cuban people.»
The statement continues by inviting independent journalists, popular media, community outlets, cooperatives, universities, and content creators to urgently address Cuba’s reality without the filters of hegemonic propaganda.
«We call upon you to investigate, report, and amplify the true causes and devastating consequences of the siege imposed by the U.S. government on the Cuban people. Ensuring the right to truthful information requires non-corporate journalism to take the lead in breaking the silence of censorship,» the professionals urged.
Concrete Data
In their declaration, the Chilean Network of Journalists and Communicators Friends of Cuba provided concrete data drawn from the official report presented by Cuba to the United Nations.
Firstly, it was reported that the direct damages caused by the blockade from March 2025 to February 2026 reached a record high of $8.083.3 million in just one year, raising the accumulated total at current prices to over $178.700 billion over six decades.
«Without this punitive suffocation device, Cuba’s Gross Domestic Product would have recorded an estimated additional growth of 10.8%, thereby dismantling the media narrative that attributes material shortages solely to internal management deficiencies,» journalists and communicators asserted.
They also raised alarms about the complex health situation caused by the U.S. blockade: «Over 100,000 patients are on the surgical waitlist, including more than 12,000 children, due to restrictions on the procurement of anesthetics, catheters, prosthetics, and medical instruments with American components or patents.»
«In pediatric oncology, the inability to access state-of-the-art chemotherapy drugs in a timely manner has critically impacted survival rates for certain childhood leukemias, decreasing them from 85% to 65%,» added the communication professionals.
