Chilean Investigations Police (PDI) have seized the phone and computer of Senator Alejandro Kusanovic, representing the Magallanes Region, amid an investigation sparked by claims from a former staff member who alleged that he was coerced into returning a portion of his salary «for the senator’s expenses».
According to national media outlets such as Mega and Radio Biobío, the operation took place on Friday, July 24, after the Punta Arenas Guarantee Court authorized a search warrant for the Public Ministry. The search was executed in the senator’s parliamentary offices in Punta Arenas as well as at his private residence shortly after 9 AM.
Another report indicated that the phone and computer of Kusanovic’s chief of staff were also seized during the operation.
The whistleblower, who served as secretary in the legislator’s Puerto Natales office between March 2022 and December 2025, stated that before signing his employment contract, he was summoned to a meeting with José Cárcamo, Kusanovic’s chief of staff, who informed him that he was expected to return 500,000 pesos each month from his salary.
Carlos Abarzúa, the attorney representing the whistleblower, explained that during this meeting, it was indicated that the money was «to cover the senator’s expenses, such as advertising and the opinion column he writes in La Prensa Austral», implying that these were «legitimate and necessary expenditures for fulfilling the senator’s functions in the region».
Moreover, Abarzúa added that the whistleblower was instructed to cover, from his own salary, all office-related costs for Kusanovic in Puerto Natales, including payments for telephone, internet, and television services, as well as purchasing cleaning supplies, coffee, sugar, cookies, and other essential items for the daily operation of the district office.
