In a statement published by various national media, Codelco Chairman Bernardo Fontaine distanced himself from the call made by the leader of the Republican Party for the government to proceed with the privatization of the state-owned mining company.
«As I have stated since taking office, our plan for Codelco’s recovery does not include privatization. Many state-owned enterprises have opened to the stock market to attract private capital while the state continues to manage them, but we are not in that idea,» Fontaine asserted.
The economist emphasized that «our goal is for Codelco to regain its leadership status, which requires us to prioritize safety and transparency, improve operations for better cash flows at lower costs, focus on investments, assess the sale of assets to raise more funds for reinvestment, and expand public-private partnerships.»
It is noteworthy that following the Republican Party leader’s call for the government to advance with the partial or full privatization of Codelco, the Chuquicamata Union organized a demonstration in defense of the state-owned mining company scheduled for August 10, coinciding with Miner’s Day, as reported by El Ciudadano:
