«There is a phrase I’ve heard throughout my life: people with disabilities achieve things out of pity. I believe this is a deeply unfair statement.» This was the opening remark from comedian Lucho Miranda, responding to disparaging comments made by Senator Camila Flores about his colleague Fabiola Campillai.
It’s important to recall that the two legislators clashed in the halls of Congress following a request for presidential pardon from right-wing lawmakers intended to benefit former police officer Patricio Maturana, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting and severely injuring Fabiola Campillai.
In the exchange, Flores claimed that Campillai «has lived off the state» due to the compensation she received because of the assault that left her blind and without the sense of taste and smell, asserting that she was elected senator «because of pity» and not for her abilities.
Miranda, a former patient of Teletón and a Paralympic medalist from Chile, argued that «thinking that everything is achieved through pity diminishes a person’s dignity; it implies that their effort is worth less than others’.»
Moreover, he pointed out, «there’s a contradiction: if pity were enough to succeed, then all people with disabilities would be successful, and we know that is not the case. In fact, many face more obstacles than opportunities.»
«If someone excels despite these difficulties, they likely had to work even harder,» he stated during his intervention on the comedy and entertainment channel Somos Fabuloso, which streams live. He emphasized that «nobody sustains a career because people feel sorry for them.»
«At some point, the audience stops looking at the story and starts to look at the work. If the work doesn’t convince, the career ends. Ultimately, what remains is not the disability, but the value that a person brings,» added Lucho Miranda.
In closing, the comedian stressed that disability «can be part of a person’s story, but it doesn’t replace talent, effort, or results. So Senator, your colleague is there on her own merits, through work proposals, or because she managed to connect with people. She is there due to popular vote, not out of pity.»
