Cristián Tapia Critiques Codelco’s Lack of Transparency in Investigative Commission on Production Overestimation

«The truth is that it has been very complex,» stated Deputy Cristián Tapia, who currently chairs the Investigative Commission on production overestimation at Codelco. The lawmaker asserted that the state-owned mining company is «covering up» everything, deeming their contribution to the parliamentary proceedings as «null.»

«This has been a complex commission because we have lacked transparency, primarily from Codelco’s Audit Committee, given that they are covering everything up. They do not truly want to reveal what has happened,» warned Tapia, who noted that «beyond the 14 million dollars in bonuses reported for this overestimation, there lies the discrediting of such an important company.»

The deputy detailed that «when we have invited various stakeholders, it’s as if no one has attended: no one has made decisions. However, we reiterate the importance of César Márquez, the former Budget and Management Control manager at Codelco, who was the first to leave the company under article 160 without any compensation, and who has been the most accurate in stating that since last July, preparations were underway to overestimate these productions.»

«And for what? To claim that Codelco increased production. When, in fact, Codelco decreased its copper production from 2024 to 2025,» added the parliamentarian representing the Atacama Region.

Moreover, Tapia added that «those 2.4 billion dollars in capitalization are merely on paper because those profits include NovaAndino, which were funds that were supposed to go to Corfo, and now are also going to Codelco.»

«So it’s quite a complex situation. We await the upcoming guests, which is very important, as the Comptroller General of the Republic will be coming in, who has been somewhat cornered regarding her authority. She is conducting a very thorough investigation into what this essential situation for the country, namely Codelco, represents,» concluded the legislator.
