The Cuban government has strongly condemned new measures imposed by the United States to intensify the blockade against the island, asserting that these actions are «criminal» with the intent to «subdue the entire Cuban population through hunger and despair.»
In a statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cuban authorities firmly rejected «in the strongest possible terms, the Executive Order issued by the White House on May 1, 2026, which exacerbates the economic, financial, and commercial blockade against Cuba to extreme and unprecedented levels.»
They also condemned the decision by the US Department of the Treasury, announced on May 7, 2026, to add Cuban entities Gaesa and MoaNickel S.A. to the Specially Designated Nationals List, which includes individuals, companies, and vessels blocked due to «threats to US national security or foreign policy,» wherein their assets are frozen and Americans are prohibited from doing business with them.
For the Cuban government, this marks the first coercive measure stemming from the order signed on May 1: «This is an act of ruthless economic aggression that multiplies the extraterritorial effects of the blockade, with the potential application of secondary sanctions against foreign companies, banks, and entities, even if their businesses in the United States have no connection to Cuba.»
«This measure will further obstruct the functioning of the national economy, which has already been facing, since January 29, 2026, the disastrous effects of the oil blockade imposed that date, which paralyzed fuel exports to the country,» stated the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
«Global Gendarme»
In the announcement, the administration, led by Miguel Díaz-Canel, denounced that the US, «acting as a global gendarme and in blatant violation of international law and elementary norms of free trade in goods and services,» explicitly attacks the sovereign rights of all states that have or wish to maintain economic, commercial, and financial relations with Cuba.
At this juncture, they warned that «no country is exempt from this threat of extending genocide against the Cuban people, attempting to force Cuba’s isolation from the international economic and financial scene.»
«We alert that this aggression against the economy and the Cuban people will only achieve the destructive effect it aims for if sovereign and independent nations allow themselves to be intimidated and frightened by the government of the United States,» emphasized the Cuban government.
In this regard, they expressed confidence that the world «will never passively accept illegal norms, will not renounce sovereign equality, nor leave its citizens, businesses, corporations, and financial entities unprotected. The international community has historically opposed and condemned the genocide being committed against the Cuban people by the United States government, which has lasted for nearly seven decades.»
«We denounce the criminal nature of these aggressive measures aimed at subduing the entire Cuban population through hunger and despair and attempting to generate a national social, economic, and political catastrophe. Additionally, we reject the intention of the government of the United States to create a humanitarian crisis scenario to justify more dangerous actions, including military aggression against Cuba,» states the report.
Finally, Cuban authorities called on the international community to confront this US policy that represents a clear transgression of the sovereignty and independence of all countries.
«Cuba will continue to denounce the blockade in all international forums. Likewise, we urge the international community to confront this onslaught, which constitutes a dangerous escalation in the US effort to exert dominance and control over Cuba’s destiny, violating the independence and sovereignty of all states,» concludes the announcement from Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
