Eduardo Bolsonaro Sentenced for Pressuring U.S. Intervention in His Father’s Coup Trial

Eduardo Bolsonaro, former congressman and son of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, has been convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Court for «coercion during the trial over an attempted coup.» This ruling stems from his attempts to lobby the U.S. for sanctions against Brazilian judges overseeing the case against his father.

«The four justices of a panel at the Supreme Court of Brazil voted on Tuesday, June 16, to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro for seeking U.S. interference in the trial concerning the coup conspiracy against his father last year,» reported France 24.

The former congressman received a sentence of 4 years and 2 months in prison for «obstruction of justice,» which he will serve in a semi-open regime, alongside a fine of 100 minimum wages, equivalent to approximately $31,700.

This conviction also results in an automatic political disqualification for 8 years for Bolsonaro, who, it should be noted, lost his congressional seat last December due to excessive absences from congressional sessions.

Bolsonaro has been residing in the United States since 2025 and was absent from the hearing.
