On Saturday, September 5th, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, a discussion titled «Fidel 100 Years: His Influence on Latin American Political Thought» will be held at the headquarters of the National Confederation of Municipal Health Workers (Confusam).
The event is organized by Izquierda Libertaria, Juventudes Libertarias, and Modatima, groups that are part of the Chilean chapter of Alba Movimientos.
«Fidel Castro was one of the most influential political and revolutionary figures of the 20th century in Latin America and the world. A trained lawyer and student leader, he actively opposed the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, led the assault on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, and subsequently founded the July 26 Movement,» organizers noted.
They added, «After the landing of the Granma and the guerrilla struggle in the Sierra Maestra, he took command of the Rebel Army which defeated the dictatorship and enabled the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in January 1959.»
«One hundred years after his birth, the event aims to historically examine Fidel Castro’s political career and the origins of the Cuban Revolution, with particular attention to the influence this process had on shaping revolutionary political thought in Latin America during the second half of the 20th century,» they emphasized.
The discussion will also address the contemporary situation in Cuba, its main challenges, and the prospects for the Cuban Revolution in the current regional context.
According to national spokesperson for Modatima, Cristóbal Rodríguez, «the discussion is particularly relevant in a Latino-American and global environment marked by the rise of the far-right, the weakening of democracies, and the increasing contention over political and social projects that will define the future of national sovereignty in the region.»
He indicated, «This is due to the renewed impetus of U.S. imperialism, with direct interventions like in Venezuela and indirect ones, through the strengthening of bot networks and disinformation that create favorable grounds for far-right alternatives.»
In this context, academic Pedro Lovera, who will be part of the panel, added: «Recovering the political history of Latin America critically and discussing the legacy of its main revolutionary processes is also a way to understand the tensions of the present.»
Alba Movimientos
The gathering is part of the initiatives promoted by Alba Movimientos, a political and social articulation space that brings together organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The event is part of efforts formulated during the IV Continental Assembly of Alba Movimientos, which is focused on discussing the current challenges of the region, strengthening Latin American unity, and expressing solidarity with Cuba under the slogan «Cuba is not alone.»
The gathering will take place at Fanor Velasco 31, Santiago, just steps from the Los Héroes Metro station (Line 2) and is open to the public.
