Original article: «No seré silenciada»: Ilhan Omar, férrea opositora a Trump, denuncia intimidación tras allanamiento de su casa
«I will not be silenced,» asserted Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar following the raid on her Washington residence by agents from the Department of Homeland Security.
The legislator, a staunch opponent of President Donald Trump, condemned the federal action carried out during the day as a bid to attack political enemies, weaponize law enforcement, and escalate a campaign of political intimidation.
Undeterred, Omar posted a powerful message on her social media, stating: «I am fine. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and use federal law enforcement as a weapon. For ten years, Trump has attacked me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is merely the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,» she wrote.
«I will not be silenced,» she emphasized.
The federal intervention was coordinated by the National Security Investigations Office and the Department of Justice. According to the statement, it is part of an ongoing criminal investigation related to alleged immigration fraud involving documentation processed by her father when she was a child.
Tom Homan, known as the «border czar» under Trump, confirmed that federal agents executed a search of Omar’s residence via a court order and as part of an ongoing inquiry.
Homan stated to the press that the Department of Justice (DOJ) directed the operation in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). However, he did not provide details on what prompted the raid or the specific facts the investigators seek to ascertain.
«I can confirm that a search warrant was executed, signed by a judge. There is an ongoing investigation. I will not go into details about the criminal investigation,» he affirmed in comments reported by ABC News.
In mid-September, Homan referenced this inquiry, while a federal prosecutor indicated that the statute of limitations might affect potential accusations regarding her marriage in 2009.
Denunciation of «Outrageous Abuse of Power» Following the Raid
Following the raid, the office of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar issued a statement describing the incident as an «outrageous abuse of power» by the far-right government of Donald Trump.
«This raid by Trump’s Department of Homeland Security is an egregious abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the use of federal law enforcement as a weapon against political enemies,» they stated.
«For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly attacked Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with incendiary rhetoric, repeatedly making her a target. Now, those attacks have escalated to a senseless federal raid. The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate political enemies,» they declared in a message posted on X.
Ilhan Omar: A Staunch Opponent of Trump
Since 2019, legislator Ilhan Omar, who belongs to the left wing of the Democratic Party, has represented the fifth congressional district of Minnesota.
She is the first Muslim woman and of Somali descent to reach the House of Representatives and her actions have been consistently scrutinized due to her political positions. In fact, she is part of the group known as «The Squad,» a dynamic force of progressive lawmakers on the left wing of Congress, who have also faced repeated attacks from Trump since his first mandate.
As a staunch opponent of Donald Trump, she has been a recurring target of the Republican president’s rhetoric since his first term, both for her immigrant status in the United States and her opinions.
In January of this year, Trump attacked Omar during a rally in Iowa, and hours later an assailant sprayed the congresswoman with a substance that turned out to be vinegar during an event in Minneapolis. The attacker was recently sentenced to 14 months in prison.
Additionally, when the Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives in 2023, they voted to expel the Democratic congresswoman from the House Foreign Affairs Committee after her comments regarding the genocide perpetrated by Israel in Gaza.
In light of the ongoing verbal attacks and episodes of physical aggression, civil rights organizations and advocates have raised red flags regarding the targeting of Omar and the Somali-American community.
