During a heated debate in the European Parliament, Podemos MEP Irene Montero highlighted unusual oil market activity that occurred just 15 minutes before Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in Iran. Montero boldly criticized the ties between geopolitical decisions and the business interests of the former U.S. president’s inner circle, suggesting a potential global conflict of interest.

Montero, who serves as the Vice Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in the European Parliament, went further to point out that Trump’s son owns a drone company involved in conflicts he himself oversees, as well as a betting firm that speculates on the fluctuations of war. She stated, “They even want to build a luxury resort on the ruins of genocide,” eliciting a notable silence from many legislators in the Eurochamber.

As energy prices suffocate Europe amid cuts announced by Germany, Montero contrasted this harsh reality with the scenes in Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon: “Bombed hospitals, pile of corpses, children burned alive.” Her speech emphasized that these are not mere coincidences, but possibly deliberate political choices that benefit the power structures at the expense of European citizens and global peace.

Why do you support this war business? How can you profit from war?” she directly questioned the European Commission and other members, in a passionate appeal that received backing from her parliamentary group (GUE/NGL), reinforcing her stance as a critical voice against the dominant geopolitical narratives within community institutions.

As a member of the Delegation for Relations with Palestine, she called for the Eurochamber to investigate these practices and end the institutional complicity that, in her view, allows familial elites to profit from instability in the Middle East.

Her statements have opened a political front that elevates the debate on ethics in international decision-making.
