Jeannette Jara Challenges José Antonio Kast on Security Policies: «Are You Tired After Cutting Taxes for the Wealthy?»

«Are you tired after cutting taxes for the wealthy?», this was the pointed question from former presidential candidate Jeannette Jara directed at José Antonio Kast, following the president’s accusations of her lax stance on security and irregular immigration.

In his statements, Kast asserted that a government led by Jara would never have implemented the controversial security measures that his administration is pushing forward.

«Someone like Jeannette Jara would never have proposed a situation like this,» the head of state argued, attempting to link the former Minister of Labor with the promotion of uncontrolled migration.

«Who favored the entry of irregular migration? Jeannette Jara’s sector,» Kast fired back, though he avoided clarifying whether his own justice reform has ideological underpinnings.

The president intensified his criticisms against the government of his predecessor Gabriel Boric.

«Let’s look at the foundational reform that was proposed during the early months of Gabriel Boric’s government. There was no balance of power; there was a denigration of police authority,» he stated.

Additionally, he attributed progress in public order to civic pressure rather than the Executive’s initiative. «The laws passed to benefit police action were not due to the initiative of those in power; rather, it was because there was a very high public demand for security that still exists today,» he maintained.

Jara’s response was swift, as she called out the far-right leader through her social media for failing to fulfill his campaign commitments regarding security and migration, in addition to promoting a major tax reform that favors big business interests, which includes controversial measures such as a reduction of the first-category tax from 27% to 23%, the elimination of tax on stock market capital gains, and the implementation of a tax credit for formal employment; along with a 25-year tax invariability for investments exceeding US$ 50 million.

Moreover, she urged him to lift bank secrecy as a contribution to the fight against organized crime and to track drug trafficking finances, due to the right’s representatives’ refusal in Congress.

«President José Antonio Kast. Lifting bank secrecy would be better. Stop deflecting onto me and get to work. The work you promised during your campaign: security and migration control. Or are you too tired after cutting taxes for the wealthy?» the former presidential candidate stated.
