La Araucanía: Opposition Leaders Unite for a Shared Political Agenda at Regional Summit

Nine opposition parties in La Araucanía, represented by lawmakers, mayors, councilors, regional authorities, and leaders from various communes, gathered in Temuco for a regional summit aimed at «defining a common agenda and strengthening political coordination in response to the main challenges facing the region,» they stated.

Described as «pioneering at the national level,» the event attracted over 200 attendees and included representatives from the Socialist Party, Party for Democracy, Broad Front, Christian Democracy, Christian Left, Green Social Regionalist Federation, Radical Party, Communist Party, and Liberal Party.

«During the meeting, working groups were established to discuss the regional context, the budget discussion, and the priorities that participating forces will seek to promote in the coming months,» remarked the political coalition behind the event.

Unity Declaration

The summit concluded with the following declaration: «Unity of the Left and Center-Left for La Araucanía,» establishing one of its main commitments as «moving from diagnosis to coordinated action among the various political representations.»

Guido Venegas Avilés, spokesperson for the Opposition Parties Table of La Araucanía and regional president of the PS, emphasized that the summit aims to extend beyond a political declaration: «From now on, we commit to defending common priorities in budget discussions and to coordinating our parliamentary, regional, and municipal representations,» announced the leader.

In this regard, one of the key issues discussed during the event was the potential impact of the budgetary scenario on La Araucanía, particularly in areas such as Public Works, Housing, Health, and Education.

Participants expressed concern about the availability of resources for the regions and highlighted the need to safeguard public investment, fund social policies, and strengthen institutions.

They also proposed addressing security and development as complementary dimensions for La Araucanía, alongside support for sectors such as agriculture, small businesses, and regional connectivity.

From a municipal perspective, Temuco’s mayor, Roberto Neira, stated that any political project must reconnect with the daily concerns of the people.

«We have distanced ourselves too much from the streets. Sometimes we write too much, talk too much, but we don’t knock on doors and engage with people’s realities,» opined the mayor, who also noted the increase in requests for social support currently being received by municipalities.

Regional Projection

The meeting also addressed the need to establish common political objectives and maintain coordination spaces among the various opposition forces. Regarding this point, Senator Francisco Huenchumilla from the DC party described the day as a starting point for facing the new political landscape.

«This is a first step, because if we are disunited and each act on their own, we are destined to fail. Unity is the necessary tool for us to have strength,» asserted the legislator.

Thus, the participants agreed to maintain their coordination and align their parliamentary, regional, and municipal representations in face of budget discussions and other issues deemed essential for the region.

The declaration presented at the close of the day summarized this commitment under a common definition: «La Araucanía deserves a State that fulfills its obligations and an opposition that is united to demand it.»
