José Torres, the father of young Dariel Mateo, who has been diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma affecting his vision, attended a press conference held at the Salón El Pensador of the National Congress. The only treatment that can save his eyesight is not available in Chile; it is offered at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona, Spain.
The event was led by Deputy Cristián Tapia, representing District 4 of Atacama, who remarked:
«We want to appeal to mining and electricity companies, both generators and distributors, to contribute a little something to help fulfill the dream of the parents and save the innocence of a two-year-old child.»
Deputy Carlos Arqueros, representing District 3 of Antofagasta, also expressed support, stating:
«We want to help Dariel Mateo, and we welcome contributions from mining workers and the major companies in my region.»
Deputy Marco Sulantay, representing District 5 of Coquimbo, was also present and emphasized:
«Corporate social responsibility must play a part in such a noble, important, and beautiful cause as improving the quality of life and health for Dariel Mateo, who deserves the best from all of us.»
In a heartfelt plea, Dariel’s father, José Torres, called on everyone to join the campaign:
«Please help us save his little eyes.»
